A Harvest of Hearts by Andrea Eames
Bibliolatry.Blog Rating: ★★★☆☆

A Harvest of Hearts is a fantasy romance by Andrea Eames, narrated by Foss, a butcher’s daughter whose heart is “Snagged” by a sorcerer.
Foss lives in a kingdom where impossibly beautiful sorceresses (and a sorcerer) travel amongst the villages to harvest pieces of human hearts as magical ingredients to protect the kingdom from war and famine. Everyone claims the harvest is a “small sacrifice” for peace and abundance.
When Foss’s heart is accidentally “Snagged” by the sorcerer visiting for a harvest, the magic compels her to leave the familiarity of her village to confront him in the city, only to find herself spellbound by the sorcerer and entangled in a kingdom-wide threat.
Foss’s low self-esteem is intertwined with her stubbornness and matched by cynicism and bitterness that blind her to affection, which is frustratingly obvious to the reader. The villagers believe she has been cursed since birth and she agrees with them, constantly body-shaming herself. Foss has other flaws that she must overcome, making her a little more of a believable character, though her development is slow.
The novel is over 425 pages long but is a quick read nonetheless. While the plot is moderately predictable with several glaring inconsistencies, A Harvest of Hearts would appeal to fantasy romance fans looking for an easy read.
A Harvest of Hearts will be released on February 25, 2025.
